Muğla, which hosts famous tourist destinations of Turkey like Bodrum and Marmaris, also has a less known beach, Sarıgerme, as dazzling as others, that offers an annual Kite Festival. During the festival, organized on the long beach of pure sand, hundreds of kites fill the sky, while colorful vendor stands and other activities offer entertaining moments to the participants. The Festival, in which kite contest winners are presented small presents, attract the attention of not only local people but also the tourists. If you are planning your Turkey trip in April at the unique tourist destinations of Muğla, do not forget to visit nearby Sarıgerme festival for a distinctive experience.
The festival is organized by Sarıgerme village headman and the Sarıgerme Environment, Culture and Education Association (SARÇED), and the hotels in the region contribute free food. During the festival, the kite contest becomes the scene of intense competition. Contestants are required to participate only with hand-made kites and a jury awards scores and ranking. Scores are given based on several criteria including overall appearance of the kite, and the ability to fly high. An interesting point about the contest is that although it is organized for children, adults show more interest.
You can visit the festival, which was organized in 2005 for the first time, only to enjoy the scene or you can enter the contest to experience the joy of flying a kite again. Spectators experience magical moments watching hundreds of colorful kites sailing in the sky, adding to the spectacular beauty of the beach. The festival also hosts several activities aiming to increase the environmental awareness in the surrounding area. In this context, several environmentalist activities are organized within the scope of the festival to increase environmental awareness among children.
İf you are planning to go to the region by plane, Sarıgerme is only 12 km away from Muğla Dalaman Airport. If you don’t have your own vehicle, you can easily find a taxi to take you there.
